Finca Dofi, Priorat
ST -
Inky violet. Exotic,
multi-faceted aromas of dark cherry, blackberry, liquorice, violet,
black pepper and graphite. Firm and structured, with chewy texture and
powerful, concentrated red and dark fruit flavours tinged by minerals
and succulent herbs. For a wine of such concentration this is elegant
and poised. Shows great precision and energy on the long, spicy finish. |

Viñas de Gain Rioja
RP -
A 100% Tempranillo cuvee produced from
five different high altitude vineyards. Yields were a modest 35
hectolitres per hectare. This elegant, medium dark ruby-coloured Rioja
exhibits Burgundian-like characteristics of sweet and sour cherries,
vanilla, and spice. Restrained yet richly fruity, pure, and nicely
textured. |

Hacienda Monasterio Crianza
Ribera del Duero
RP -
The wine at Hacienda
Monasterio is made by Peter Sisseck of Dominio Pingus. The vineyards are
in the tenderloin of the region between Pesquera del Duero and Valbuena.
The 2005 Crianza is made up of 80% Tinto Fino, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon,
and 10% Merlot. Opaque purple-coloured, the nose offers up floral notes
of lilies and violets, mineral, black cherry and blackberry which jump
from the glass. This is followed by a plush, balanced, savoury wine with
gobs of spicy black fruits, and a long finish. |

Numanthia
Toro
RP -
The 2003 Numanthia was
fashioned from yields of one ton of fruit per acre .
This cuvee is made from 70- to 100-year-old vines planted at a 2,300
foot elevation, which no doubt accounts for the freshness in this
massively rich, intense red.
A vivid, intense nose of espresso roast, pain grille, sweet black
cherries, and crème de cassis is followed by a full-bodied,
intensely-concentrated, rich, well-delineated, moderately structured
wine. |

Numanthia
Toro
RP -
The 2001 Numanthia, is
fashioned from a 70-100 year old Tinta de Toro vineyard planted at a
2300 foot elevation. After a 28 day maceration, the wine undergoes
malolactic in barrel, is aged 19 months in new French oak, and is
bottled without fining or filtration. The spectacular, opaque
purple-coloured 2001 offers an explosive nose of melted liquorice,
barbecue smoke, blackberries, crème de cassis, camphor, and graphite.
Full-bodied with gorgeously rich, concentrated fruit, a layered texture,
and tremendous purity. |

Flor de Pingus
Ribera del Duero
RP -
The 2005 Flor de Pingus
comes from rented vineyards planted to 100% Tempranillo. The wine spends
14 months in new French oak. Purple-coloured, it offers an alluring
bouquet of pain grille, crushed stone, violets, black raspberry, and
blueberry. Already complex on the palate, it has gobs of sweet fruit,
excellent intensity, perfect balance, and a 60-second finish. In the
price/quality sweepstakes, this might be Spain’s finest wine. |

Flor de Pingus
Ribera del Duero
RP -
In the wonderful 2004
vintage, owner/winemaker Peter Sisseck has outdone himself.
If I were
just starting to build a wine collection and had limited income, I can
think of no better foundation than a dozen bottles of 2004 Flor de
Pingus. In the context of the world’s great wines, it is a stupendous
value, a steal. It is 100% Tempranillo from very low yields and is aged
14 months in 100% new French barriques. Opaque purple in colour, it
emits already complex aromas of smoke, toast, coffee, blueberry,
blackberry, and liquorice. Lush on the palate, super ripe and sweet, as
well as multi-dimensional, this great effort can be drunk now, but I’d
opt for cellaring it for 6-8 years to allow further evolution. |

Rotllan Torra Tirant
Priorato
RP -
A prodigious effort, the
2001 Tirant is a 9,000-bottle cuvee made from 30% Grenache (90-100 years
old), 25% Carignan (90-100 years old), 25% young vine Cabernet
Sauvignon, 10% Syrah, and 10% Merlot. Fermented in large oak foudres and
aged 12 months in new French oak, it will be bottled with neither fining
nor filtration. Inky/purple-coloured to the rim, it boasts a spectacular
bouquet of blueberries, blackberries, and the region’s classic crushed
stone minerality. This full-throttle yet remarkably elegant 2001
possesses tremendous intensity and texture as well as layers of flavour,
but comes across as not over the top, overripe, or overly heavy. The
60-second finish reveals more noticeable tannin than the other cuvees.
Give it 1-2 years of cellaring and drink it over the following 10-15.
The 2001 Tirant is indeed a special wine |

Dioro Seleccion, Rioja
RP -
The prodigious 2001 Dioro

completely in French oak, this loaded 2001 boasts a deep purple colour
as well as a sweet perfume of lead pencil shavings, white chocolate,
tobacco leaves, crème de cassis, cherries, cola, and smoky new oak.
Full-bodied and ripe, with superb purity and a multilayered texture,
this exceptional red should hit its peak in 2-4 years, and last for 15+. |
