    AALTO
A top Ribera Del Duero domaine, making powerful, well structured, long lasting wines.

RP: Bodegas y Vinedos Aalto is a partnership between legendary vigneron Mariano Garcia and Javier Zaccagnini, former President of the governing body of the Ribera del Duero DO. Aalto is sourced from 7 different villages on a variety of soils with vineyard age ranging from 40-100 years and was aged for 24 months in French and American oak.

AG/Josh Raynolds -
(all Tempranillo, was aged for 24 months in a combination of French and American oak): Opaque ruby. Smoky, mineral-accented cherry and dark berries on the deeply perfumed nose. Palate-coating black and blue fruit flavours pick up violet pastille and mocha nuances with air. Fleshy and densely packed but lively too, finishing with noteworthy power and persistence and harmonious tannins.

'AALTO PS'
Aalto
Ribera del Duero

RP -
The 2010 Aalto was assembled and ready for bottling when I visited the winery. It is already showing great precision and focus on the nose with vanilla-tinged dark cherry and cassis fruit, followed by an undertow of candied orange peel.
The palate is already displaying wonderful balance, with supple, very fine tannins and a luscious, sweet candied finish that offers blood orange and tangerine-infused dark fruit.
There is a crisp theme of acidity to keep everything balanced. This is very promising.

A glass-coating opaque purple color, it is already displaying a complex aromatic array of sandalwood, smoke, espresso, lavender, Asian spices, and assorted blue and black fruits. The glass-staining 2006 Aalto PS was aged for 32 months in 70% new French oak. It emits a super-expressive aromatic array of pain grille, crushed stone, lavender, spice box, and blackberry. Firm and structured on the palate, it has a boatload of intense, succulent, spicy fruit, ripe tannin, and impeccable balance.

    ALION
Bodegas Alion was started by the renowned estate of Vega Sicilia in 1991. Grapes are sourced from vineyards next to the winery and from Vega Sicilia’s own vineyards at Valbuena. Eighteen hectares of Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) form the actual Alion estate.

RP -
The 2011 Alion is pure Tempranillo from vineyards averaging 25 to 30 years of age, harvested early (second half of September) matured for 16 months in new Nevers barrels (that’s a difference with Vega Sicilia; for Alion all wood is French). It is an exuberant, ripe Alion, with hedonist’s aromas that jump out of the glass. It is indeed a showy vintage, with aromas of violets, molasses, cereals and a whiff of malt whisky. The palate is tannic with lactic and warm flavours.

Even more remarkable is the 2012 Solanera Viñas Viejas, a blend of 70% Mourvedre, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Grenache aged 10 months in a combination of French and American oak. A custom cuvee, this amazing red wine displays notes of lead pencil shavings, acacia flowers, black raspberries, blueberries and black currants. This full-bodied, intense 2012 tastes like it should cost three to five times as much. Full-bodied, stunningly pure and textured, it should last for 4-5 years, possibly longer.

The 2007 Reserva shows far greater pedigree than the 2006. The blend is approximately the same with an additional two months in American oak. It exhibits greater intensity on the nose with elegant red fruit, mingling with lavender and terracotta aromas. It is well-defined and speaks of its place. The palate is medium-bodied with a fleshy, well-defined entry. Crisp red fruit, sage and a touch of orange rind vie for attention, while the oak is succinctly well-integrated.
The cocoa-tinged finish is both satisfying and long.

Inky ruby. Seductively aromatic nose offers ripe red and dark berries, smoky minerals, aged beef, baking spices and flowers. Sweet black raspberry and cassis flavours are firmed by youthfully bitter tannins and complicated by floral pastille, vanilla bean and sweet chewing tobacco qualities. This is already showing some complexity, so it wouldn't be criminal to drink it now, but I'd leave mine alone for at least another six years.

    DOMINO de PINGUS
A top Ribera del Duero estate who use Organic Methods in all the wine making. Their top wine "Pingus" is very sought and sells at £300 per bottle!
Their 2nd wine  "Flor de Pingus" is also of great quality, and represents great value compared to the top wine.

Peter Sisseck, a Dane trained in Bordeaux, was dispatched to Ribera del Duero, Spain, in 1990.
From the start, Sisseck aimed to produce top quality wines in small quantities. He consequently sought out particular terroir and parcels of ancient vines. Pingus was the first wine he produced independently and it was a triumph.
It soared to worldwide acclaim, as did Peter’s reputation as a truly gifted winemaker.
Flor de Pingus then followed.

Pingus is fully biodynamic and Flor is moving in that direction.
PSI Pingus is a new innovative project; 2007 being the first vintage.

The 2012 PSI, from an extremely dry vintage, produced with Tempranillo grapes with 5% Garnacha (a percentage that will be increased in the forthcoming vintages) that fermented in cement vats and aged for 18 months in a combination of used French barriques, oak foudres and cement vats. 150,000 bottles were produced. It was bottled in May 2014 and it feels closed and inaccessible, a bit stubborn or perhaps suffering from the recent bottling. It takes a long time to open up, finally revealing a core of sweet red fruit and notes of flowers, perfectly integrated oak. The palate is medium-bodied, delicious, more in line with the 2010s than with 2011s, sleek and pure, very balanced. It feels like a cool vintage, but it was not. A real triumph.

RP -
The 2011 PSI is pure Tempranillo from a diversity of small plots of old vineyards in different zones of the Burgos province, always north of the Duero river. The grapes fermented in cement vats and aged in a combination of used barrels from Pingus, oak vats and cement tanks. It is a bright ruby red, with notes of plums and very well-integrated wood. But what really surprised me is the palate: still medium-bodied, somehow austere and lineal, straight rather than round, not showing the warmth of the vintage or alcohol at all. It only shows some toasty notes that are not excessive and that should disappear with a bit of time in the bottle.

The 2009 PSI is much more precocious on the nose compared to the 2008, a real step up in quality. It offers fresh strawberry, raspberry and a touch of cranberry, all infused with exotic notes of mango and orange essence. It blossoms beautifully in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with powdery tannins on the entry. There are subtle notes of blackberry, tobacco, tart cherry and pain grille that combine harmoniously on the understated, natural finish. This is drinking well now, but should age nicely over several years.

The 2006 Flor de Pingus spent 14 months in new French oak. Deep purple in colour, it gives up a superb bouquet of toasty oak, spice box, mineral, incense, black cherry, and blackberry.     LA RIOJA ALTA
“La Rioja Alta was founded in the town of Haro in 1890. They own 450 hectares of vineyard from which their entire portfolio is sourced, predominantly Tempranillo complemented by Graciano, Mazuelo and Garnacha. Another tenet is their use of American rather than French oak. The wood is cured for two years outdoors before being shaped and hammered into barrels at their own cooperage. Quite simply, these are some of the finest Rioja's that can grace your cellar: complex, refined, classic but without compromising fruit intensity and to reiterate: wines that speak about where they come from.” Neal Martin, Wine Advocate #202, Aug 2012

La Rioja Alta

RP -
The 2005 Gran Reserva 904 is a superb blend of Tempranillo from the villages of Briñas, Labastida and Villalba with 10% Graciano from Briones and Rodezno.
This is usually my favorite wine from La Rioja Alta and 2005 is one of its best showings, going back to the quality of the vintages of the 1950s and 60s
. The nose is very balsamic with notes of camphor, hints of mint, leather and hung game wrapped around a core of cherries in liqueur. Together it is balanced, subtle, truly elegant and classical. The palate is only medium-bodied but with great concentration of flavours that are very tasty, mineral, almost salty and framed by ultra-fine tannins and smashing balance.
A great classic.

2001 is a great vintage for all the wines from La Rioja Alta but the long-awaited 2001 Gran Reserva 890 is otherworldly. 2001 was a slow maturing vintage which produced smaller grapes especially in the old vineyards on the slopes of the Sierra Cantabria in the villages of Brinas, Labastida and Villalba where the vineyards that make it into this wine are located. The final blend contains a majority of Tempranillo with 3% Graciano and 2% Mazuelo.

RP -
This is one of the warmest years for Roda, a ripe and heady, hedonistic vintage. What I like about the wine is that it does not display any signs of over ripeness, perhaps because of some cooler days in July that slowed things down. The nose is serious and without excess, with the oak also perfectly integrated into the fruit, which is in the foreground. The palate is also terribly balanced, with very fine tannins. This is very pleasant and tasty. This wine has a profile to be a great commercial success.

The 2008 Roda Reserva starts with notes of toasty oak and a shy, reticent nose of cherries and other red fruits, very Rioja, with a good splash of sweet spices. They only use French oak, but it smells so classical that I could have sworn there was some American oak in there, which for me is a great compliment. It is lighter than the norm for this wine, medium-bodied, with a great freshness in the palate. A great, approachable classical Rioja.
