Aalto
Ribera del Duero
RP -
The opaque purple 2006 Aalto offers up a brooding bouquet of wood smoke, graphite, espresso, leather, blueberry, and blackberry liqueur. This leads to a full-bodied, dense, layered, extracted wine with loads of fruit and the structure to match. Impeccably balanced and exceptionally long in the finish, this large-scaled effort will benefit from 5-7 years of additional cellaring.

Aalto PS
Ribera del Duero
RP -
The 2005 Aalto PS is 100% Tinto Fino from vineyards over 60 years of age. It was aged for 32 months in 70% new French oak. Saturated in appearance, the wine offers up notes of pain grille, balsamic, crushed stone, floral notes, and wild black fruits.
Exceptionally powerful, focused, and beautifully proportioned, this full-bodied wine is dense, rich, and structured for the long haul.
Give this super-long, impressive effort a decade in the cellar and drink it from 2018 to 2040. Patient purchasers will be well rewarded.

Finca Dofi
Priorat
RP -
2004 was a superb vintage in Priorat and the three entries from Alvaro Palacios are stunning. The 2004 Finca Dofi offers an upgrade. It is sourced from a single vineyard on the estate of which 60% is Grenache and the balance Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, and Carignan aged in 100% new French oak. Deeper in colour than Les Terrasses, and more reticent aromatically, with coaxing, scents of toast and smoke, minerals, violets, blueberries, and chocolate emerge. Full-bodied and harmonious, there is an opulence to the fruit which is breathtaking.

El Pison is a 100% Tempranillo cuvee produced from a single vineyard planted in 1945. The soil is pure limestone, yields are a lowly 18-22 hectoliters per hectare, and the wine is aged for 18-24 months in French oak. The potentially perfect 2001 El Pison has more of everything. While it possesses an extraordinary flavour intensity, it remains light on its feet.

RP -
The 2003 Numanthia was fashioned from yields of one ton of fruit per acre .
This cuvee is made from 70- to 100-year-old vines planted at a 2,300 foot elevation, which no doubt accounts for the freshness in this massively rich, intense red.
A vivid, intense nose of espresso roast, pain grille, sweet black cherries, and crème de cassis is followed by a full-bodied, intensely-concentrated, rich, well-delineated, moderately structured wine.

Pesquera Tinto Reserva
Ribera del Duero

Inky ruby. Seductively aromatic nose offers ripe red and dark berries, smoky minerals, aged beef, baking spices and flowers. Sweet black raspberry and cassis flavours are firmed by youthfully bitter tannins and complicated by floral pastille, vanilla bean and sweet chewing tobacco qualities. This is already showing some complexity, so it wouldn't be criminal to drink it now, but I'd leave mine alone for at least another six years.

    DOMINO de PINGUS
A top Ribera del Duero estate who use Organic Methods in all the wine making. Their top wine "Pingus" is very sought and sells at £300 per bottle!
Their 2nd wine  "Flor de Pingus" is also of great quality, and represents great value compared to the top wine.

Peter Sisseck, a Dane trained in Bordeaux, was dispatched to Ribera del Duero, Spain, in 1990.
From the start, Sisseck aimed to produce top quality wines in small quantities. He consequently sought out particular terroir and parcels of ancient vines. Pingus was the first wine he produced independently and it was a triumph.
It soared to worldwide acclaim, as did Peter’s reputation as a truly gifted winemaker.
Flor de Pingus then followed.
Pingus is fully biodynamic and Flor is moving in that direction.
PSI Pingus is a new innovative project; 2007 being the first vintage.

The 2006 Flor de Pingus spent 14 months in new French oak. Deep purple in colour, it gives up a superb bouquet of toasty oak, spice box, mineral, incense, black cherry, and blackberry. Youthful, full-bodied, intense, and powerful on the palate, it retains an elegant personality despite its size. Splendidly balanced, it will evolve for 4-6 years and deliver prime drinking from 2013 to 2026.
It is a superb value in great wine considering that the price of Pingus Junior is one-tenth that of Pingus.

Flor de Pingus
Ribera del Duero
RP -
In the wonderful 2004 vintage, owner/winemaker Peter Sisseck has outdone himself.
If I were just starting to build a wine collection and had limited income, I can think of no better foundation than a dozen bottles of 2004 Flor de Pingus.
In the context of the world’s great wines, it is a stupendous value, a steal. It is 100% Tempranillo from very low yields and is aged 14 months in 100% new French barriques. Opaque purple in colour, it emits already complex aromas of smoke, toast, coffee, blueberry, blackberry, and liquorice. Lush on the palate, super ripe and sweet, as well as multi-dimensional, this great effort can be drunk now, but I’d opt for cellaring it for 6-8 years to allow further evolution.

Rotllan Torra Tirant
Priorat
RP -
A prodigious effort, the 2001 Tirant is a 9,000-bottle cuvee made from 30% Grenache (90-100 years old), 25% Carignan (90-100 years old), 25% young vine Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Syrah, and 10% Merlot. Fermented in large oak foudres and aged 12 months in new French oak, it will be bottled with neither fining nor filtration. Inky/purple-coloured to the rim, it boasts a spectacular bouquet of blueberries, blackberries, and the region’s classic crushed stone minerality. This full-throttle yet remarkably elegant 2001 possesses tremendous intensity and texture as well as layers of flavour, but comes across as not over the top, overripe, or overly heavy. The 60-second finish reveals more noticeable tannin than the other cuvees.
The 2001 Tirant is indeed a special wine.
