'AALTO PS'
Aalto
Ribera del Duero

RP -
The 2010 Aalto was assembled and ready for bottling when I visited the winery. It is already showing great precision and focus on the nose with vanilla-tinged dark cherry and cassis fruit, followed by an undertow of candied orange peel.
The palate is already displaying wonderful balance, with supple, very fine tannins and a luscious, sweet candied finish that offers blood orange and tangerine-infused dark fruit.
There is a crisp theme of acidity to keep everything balanced. This is very promising.

Antonio Galloni/Josh Raynolds-
Opaque purple. Explosive aromas of black and blue fruit liqueurs, smoky Indian spices, mocha and minerals, with a sexy floral quality in the background. Fleshy and smooth, with excellent clarity and spicy lift to its cassis and mulberry flavours. Repeats the blue fruit note on the very long, sweet, focused finish. This is delicious now but has the depth to age as well.

SOLANERA
Viñas Viejas
Bodegas Castaño

RP -
Even more remarkable is the 2012 Solanera Viñas Viejas, a blend of 70% Mourvedre, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Grenache aged 10 months in a combination of French and American oak. A custom cuvee, this amazing red wine displays notes of lead pencil shavings, acacia flowers, black raspberries, blueberries and black currants. This full-bodied, intense 2012 tastes like it should cost three to five times as much. Full-bodied, stunningly pure and textured, it should last for 4-5 years, possibly longer.

The 2007 Reserva shows far greater pedigree than the 2006. The blend is approximately the same with an additional two months in American oak. It exhibits greater intensity on the nose with elegant red fruit, mingling with lavender and terracotta aromas. It is well-defined and speaks of its place. The palate is medium-bodied with a fleshy, well-defined entry. Crisp red fruit, sage and a touch of orange rind vie for attention, while the oak is succinctly well-integrated.
The cocoa-tinged finish is both satisfying and long.

The 2004 Reserva (of which there are a mere 80,000 cases) is a blend of 91% Tempranillo, 6% Garnacha, and 3% Mazuelo aged for 22 months in a mix of new and used American oak. Medium to dark ruby-coloured, it offers up a stylish bouquet of cedar, leather, tobacco, spice box, and blackberry. Medium-bodied, nicely balanced, and succulent, this ripe, tasty wine from a superb vintage will evolve for 3-4 years and perform at its best between 2011 and 2019.
It is a very good value in the classic Rioja style.

Inky ruby. Seductively aromatic nose offers ripe red and dark berries, smoky minerals, aged beef, baking spices and flowers. Sweet black raspberry and cassis flavours are firmed by youthfully bitter tannins and complicated by floral pastille, vanilla bean and sweet chewing tobacco qualities. This is already showing some complexity, so it wouldn't be criminal to drink it now, but I'd leave mine alone for at least another six years.

    DOMINO de PINGUS
A top Ribera del Duero estate who use Organic Methods in all the wine making. Their top wine "Pingus" is very sought and sells at £300 per bottle!
Their 2nd wine  "Flor de Pingus" is also of great quality, and represents great value compared to the top wine.

Peter Sisseck, a Dane trained in Bordeaux, was dispatched to Ribera del Duero, Spain, in 1990.
From the start, Sisseck aimed to produce top quality wines in small quantities. He consequently sought out particular terroir and parcels of ancient vines. Pingus was the first wine he produced independently and it was a triumph.
It soared to worldwide acclaim, as did Peter’s reputation as a truly gifted winemaker.
Flor de Pingus then followed.

Pingus is fully biodynamic and Flor is moving in that direction.
PSI Pingus is a new innovative project; 2007 being the first vintage.

Ribera del Duero

RP -
The 2012 PSI, from an extremely dry vintage, produced with Tempranillo grapes with 5% Garnacha (a percentage that will be increased in the forthcoming vintages) that fermented in cement vats and aged for 18 months in a combination of used French barriques, oak foudres and cement vats. 150,000 bottles were produced. It was bottled in May 2014 and it feels closed and inaccessible, a bit stubborn or perhaps suffering from the recent bottling. It takes a long time to open up, finally revealing a core of sweet red fruit and notes of flowers, perfectly integrated oak. The palate is medium-bodied, delicious, more in line with the 2010s than with 2011s, sleek and pure, very balanced. It feels like a cool vintage, but it was not. A real triumph.

Ribera del Duero

RP -
The 2011 PSI is pure Tempranillo from a diversity of small plots of old vineyards in different zones of the Burgos province, always north of the Duero river. The grapes fermented in cement vats and aged in a combination of used barrels from Pingus, oak vats and cement tanks. It is a bright ruby red, with notes of plums and very well-integrated wood. But what really surprised me is the palate: still medium-bodied, somehow austere and lineal, straight rather than round, not showing the warmth of the vintage or alcohol at all. It only shows some toasty notes that are not excessive and that should disappear with a bit of time in the bottle.

The 2009 PSI is much more precocious on the nose compared to the 2008, a real step up in quality. It offers fresh strawberry, raspberry and a touch of cranberry, all infused with exotic notes of mango and orange essence. It blossoms beautifully in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with powdery tannins on the entry. There are subtle notes of blackberry, tobacco, tart cherry and pain grille that combine harmoniously on the understated, natural finish. This is drinking well now, but should age nicely over several years.

    LA RIOJA ALTA
“La Rioja Alta was founded in the town of Haro in 1890. They own 450 hectares of vineyard from which their entire portfolio is sourced, predominantly Tempranillo complemented by Graciano, Mazuelo and Garnacha. Another tenet is their use of American rather than French oak. The wood is cured for two years outdoors before being shaped and hammered into barrels at their own cooperage. Quite simply, these are some of the finest Rioja's that can grace your cellar: complex, refined, classic but without compromising fruit intensity and to reiterate: wines that speak about where they come from.” Neal Martin, Wine Advocate #202, Aug 2012

TORRE DE ONA MARTELO
Rioja Reserva
La Rioja Alta

New Wine/Background:

This wine is from a single
2 hectare plot at their Torre de Ona estate in Rioja Alavesa.
La Rioja Alta have dedicated a considerable amount of time and money into perfecting the wine and this is the first vintage of Martelo that they have released.
They have spent 20 years identifying the best parcel of the estate –this is a true labour of love.

It is predominantly Tempranillo with small amounts of Mazuelo, Garnacha and Viura and spends 24 months in 80% American and 20% French oak barrels. It represents a departure to a slightly more modern style for this bastion of traditional winemaking. The results are brilliant and they see this as being one of their prestige wines in years to come.

'VIÑA ALBERDI'
Rioja Reserva
La Rioja Alta

RP -
The 2010 Viña Alberdi is a Tempranillo blend from different vineyards from what they consider an extraordinary vintage. This wine is matured in American oak barrels built by their own coopers, the first year in new barrels and the second one in third-year barrels with four manual rackings. This is the younger of their wines, with even some red berry aromas and spicy oak, quite harmonious. The palate is lively, balanced and polished, with tasty flavours and bright acidity. Delicious.
Great value for money.

RP -
This is the first vintage when they have been able to use the fruit from their new Garnacha vineyards in the village of Tudelilla (Rioja Baja), La Pedriza, which represents 20% of the blend complementing the majority of Tempranillo. There are notes of stewed meat, cured leather, cloves, other spices and an overall balsamic character.
The palate feels solid, consistent, nicely built, with abundant tannins and good balancing acidity.
This should stand up to food and be able to develop in bottle.

Rioja Reserva Especial
La Rioja Alta

RP -
The current release is the 2001 Reserva Especial, a deeply coloured wine with a lovely perfume of cinnamon, lavender, incense, balsamic, and black cherry. Medium-bodied, velvety-textured, and already complex, it will continue to evolve for another 5-10 years and offer a drinking window extending from 2016 to 2036. For those seeking immediate gratification, it has the virtue of being approachable now.

RIOJA GRAN RESERVA
904
La Rioja Alta

RP -
This wants to be the classic Gran Reserva--polished, silky and elegant, with aging potential. It is a blend of Tempranillo with 10% Mazuelo aged for four years in well-seasoned American oak barrels, with eight manual rackings. I found that the freshness of the vintage and its relatively young age gave the wine a youngish character that I loved, combining developed notes of meat, spices, leather and balsam with almost cherry-like aromas.
The palate feels balanced and elegant, with fine-grained and fully resolved tannins and great acidity. This vintage of 904 surprised me!

Bodegas RODA

RP -
This is one of the warmest years for Roda, a ripe and heady, hedonistic vintage. What I like about the wine is that it does not display any signs of over ripeness, perhaps because of some cooler days in July that slowed things down. The nose is serious and without excess, with the oak also perfectly integrated into the fruit, which is in the foreground. The palate is also terribly balanced, with very fine tannins. This is very pleasant and tasty. This wine has a profile to be a great commercial success.

The 2006 Roda I Reserva has a sultry bouquet with brambly black fruit, briar, and a touch of dried rose petal, all with fine delineation. The palate is tannic and masculine on the entry. It is well-defined with touches of dried blood and spice, the fruit opting to remain in the background and allowing intriguing spicy, savoury notes to dominate the middle and finish. It deserves another three of four years in bottle so that it can fully express itself.
