CLOS DE LOS SIETE
RP:
There may be no
finer red wine value in Argentina than this superb blend of 48%
Malbec, 28% Merlot, 12% Syrah, and 12% Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine is
aged for 11 months, two-thirds in 100% new French oak and the balance in
vat and bottled without fining or filtration. Opaque purple-coloured,
the wine coats the glass while offering up a superb bouquet of toasty
oak, violets, mineral, black currant, blueberry, and black cherry. This
is followed by a layered wine with gobs of ripe fruit, a plush
texture, outstanding balance, and several years of aging potential. |

CABERNET SAUVIGNON
Nicolas Catena Zapata
RP-
The flagship, the 2007
Nicolas Catena Zapata, a blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Malbec, and
the balance Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. It delivers an enthralling
aromatic array of pain grille, pencil lead, mineral, espresso, mocha,
incense, lavender, black currant, black cherry, and blackberry. This leads
to a full-bodied, powerful yet elegant effort with great depth and
volume, precision balance, and a voluptuous personality. It conceals
plenty of structure and will effortlessly evolve for 6-8 years, drinking
well through 2032 if not longer. |

CABERNET SAUVIGNON
Nicolas Catena Zapata
RP-
The 2006 Nicolas Catena
Zapata is composed of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Malbec and spent 26
months in new French oak. It displays a superb perfume of pain grille,
spice box, truffle, wild flowers, black cherry, and black currant.
Rich, layered, dense, and complex, it, too, combines elegance and power.
The wine is structured for the long haul and should easily see its 25th
birthday, with 50 not out of the question. |

The flagship wines begin
with the purple/black-coloured 2005 Nicolas Catena Zapata, a blend of
78% Cabernet Sauvignon and 22% Malbec. The fruit was sourced from
four of the estate’s finest high-elevation vineyards, and aged for
24 months in 100% new French oak. The brooding bouquet delivers pain
grille, mineral, violet, scorched earth, pepper, espresso, black cherry,
and black raspberry aromas leading to a dense, opulent wine with gobs
of savoury fruit, ripe tannins, terrific concentration, and a 60-second
finish. |

MALBEC Argentino Vineyard
Nicolas Catena Zapata
RP-
The 2007 Argentino Malbec is
a blend of the Nicasia and Adrianna cuvees. Since I have been tasting
the Catena wines, this has generally been my preference because it seems
to have an extra dimension of complexity. So it is with the 2007
vintage. |

ALMAVIVA
A TOP Chilean
wine;
Generally considered one of the best wines from Chile!
Almaviva is a partnership of Bordeaux first-growth Chateau
Mouton-Rothschild and Concha y Toro.

Merlot), and 4-5% Cabernet Franc. It spends 18 months in new French oak

Almaviva
Wine Spectator-
Broad and muscular, boasting
lots of dark currant and fig paste notes laced with loam, licorice snap
and espresso flavours. The dense, fleshy finish lets a hint of roasted
sage. Very solid for the vintage. Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenère and
Cabernet Franc. |

Almaviva
RP-
The 2007 Almaviva
continues a series of successful vintages for this Chilean icon.
Medium purple-coloured, it exhibits an expressive bouquet of wood smoke,
pencil lead, Asian spices, incense, blackcurrant, and blackberry.
Elegantly styled and impeccably balanced, it will evolve for several
more years and drink well through 2027 at the least. |

Almaviva

The 2004 Almaviva is styled
similar to the 2005. The multi-faceted aromatics deliver vanilla, clove,
floral notes, red and black currants, and a hint of chocolate. It is a
bit more forward than the 2005 with excellent focus and delineation.
Give this elegant yet concentrated wine 3-5 years in the cellar and
drink it through 2030. |

CONCHA y TORO
An excellent Chilean
estate:
Viña Concha y Toro was founded in 1883 by Don Melchor de Concha y Toro
and his wife Doña Emiliana Subercaseaux. They planted their first
vineyard of Bordeaux varieties in the Maipo Valley, attracted by the
region’s advantageous position between the Andes and the Pacific Ocean. |
|
|
Don Melchor is the flagship
wine of Concha y Toro, a 100% Cabernet Sauvignon cuvee that was started
in 1987, making it Chile’s senior icon. |

'DON MELCHOR'
CABERNET SAUVIGNON
Concha y Toro
RP-
The 2006 Don Melchor
Cabernet Sauvignon is a glass-coating opaque purple with an alluring
bouquet of toast, tobacco, cedar, leather, mocha, and blackcurrant.
Sweet, voluptuous (but not in a fruit bomb kind of way), layered, and
complex already, its superb balance will ensure at least a decade of
evolution and it should drink well through 2036. |

The 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon
is opaque purple-coloured with aromas of pain grille, pencil lead,
scorched earth, black currant, and blackberry liqueur. This is followed

years. This lengthy, classy effort will be at its best from 2015 to

'TERRUNYO'
CARMENERE
Concha y Toro
RP-
When Carmenere is bad, it’s
very, very bad. But when it’s good? it’s sublime as Terrunyo, a winery
under the Concha y Toro umbrella, has demonstrated on several occasions.
The 2005 Carmenere is opaque purple in colour with a kinky perfume of
smoky oak, violets, spice box, blueberry preserves, and blackberry
liqueur. This leads to a silky textured wine with remarkable
richness, concentration, and depth. This opulent effort conceals
enough structure to evolve for 3-5 years but can be enjoyed now as well
as over the next 10-15 years. |

'DON MAXIMIANO'
FOUNDERS RESERVE
Errazuriz
RP- The
2006 Founder's Reserve Don Maximiano is a blend of 82% Cabernet
Sauvignon with the balance Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Syrah. It
spent 18 months in mostly new French oak. Aromas of pain grille,
pencil lead, Asian spices, incense, and blackcurrant are reminiscent of
a classified growth Pauillac.
Medium- to full-bodied in the mouth, the wine has a plush texture,
plenty of ripe tannin, layers of spicy fruit, and outstanding
concentration.
This impeccably balanced wine will benefit from 5-7 years of
additional cellaring and have a prime drinking window extending from
2015 to 2031. |
