Chateauneuf-du-Pape BLANC
Beaucastel
RP -
The 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape
Blanc is an amazingly open-knit, full-bodied, honeyed white boasting tons
of orange marmalade, quince, white currant and crème brulee liqueur-like
notes, stunning purity and richness, and a fabulous full-bodied,
unctuously textured mouthfeel. Its richness is off the charts, and the
wine offers a completely contrasting style with the more delineated, zesty
2010. |

Chateau Grillet
ST -
Light, greenish-gold.
Mineral-laced scents of orange, pear and white flowers, plus a subtle
spicy quality. Light and precise, offering tangy citrus and honeysuckle
flavours, with dusty minerality adding energy. Brisk and graceful, with
very good finishing cut.
I like this wine's lithe character but doubt that I'd have guessed it
was made from Viognier. |

Chateauneuf-du-Pape BLANC
Clos des Papes
Wine Spectator -
Superfresh, with blanched
almond, green plum, yellow apple and verbena notes carried by almost brisk
minerality. The finish is really bright and mouth-watering. There's
rather stony precision and this still a touch tight. Begs for cellaring.

Terrific purity and
precision. Like a young Meursault, with acacia flower, blanched almond
and honey notes pushed by a tangy, driven, minerally finish. Should age
well. |

Le VIEUX DONJON
This estate is
run by Lucien Michel, his wife, Marie-José, and daughter Claire.
The White CNDP is refreshing and 'nutty', which makes a pleasant change
from the usual Chardonnay! |

An excellent estate that makes CNDP in
the traditional style.

DOMAINE CHAPOUTIER
Generally considered the very
best Hermitage Domaine: with a
very large selection of wines -all are organically made with great
attention to detail and quality. |
|
|
RP
- "With twenty vintages under his belt, Michel Chapoutier and his
impressive winemaking staff go from strength to strength. These are
among the world’s greatest wines, especially the single vineyard wines,
many of which will last 50 or more years".

Ermitage
'l'Ermite Blanc'
Chapoutier
RP -
At the very top of the
appellation’s dome of decomposed granite is l’Ermite. This wine is the
equivalent of drinking liquefied rocks. The 2005 Ermitage l’Ermite
blanc has that multi-layered mouthfeel, an extraordinary nose of intense
minerality, quince, and white fruits. Some of the vines in this
parcel are 130 years old, and the wine has over-the-top richness yet
amazing acidity, depth, and a freshness that is hard to believe given
its power and intensity. |

'Le Meal Blanc'
Chapoutier
RP -
The warmest terroir for the
white Ermitage cuvees is Le Meal, an upper mid-slope terroir with a great
exposition. The most flamboyant of these wines, the 2005 Ermitage Le Meal
blanc, exhibits notes of buttered citrus, copious tropical fruit,
crushed rocks, white currants, and an amazing amount of honeysuckle allied
with good acidity and enormous body. |

'Cuvee de l'Oree Blanc'
Chapoutier
RP -
The 2005 Ermitage Cuvee de
l’Oree is a spectacular wine, with notes of nectarine, quince,
honeyed hazelnuts, honeysuckle, and an almost exotic note buttressed by
excellent acidity and no notice of any oak. The wine has prodigious
richness and a full-bodied intensity that needs to be tasted to be
believed. This is stunning stuff that should drink well for 50 or
more years, but you can drink it over the next 4-5 years or forget
it for
12-15. |
