'Campoleone'
Lamborghini
RP -
One of the most spectacular wines made in Italy, this
unfined/unfiltered, Merlot/Sangiovese blend (about 3,400 cases
produced) boasts an extraordinary perfume of saddle leather,
smoke, cassis, prunes, and plums. Rich, full-bodied, and
voluptuously-textured, with layers of concentrated fruit, a
magnificent seamlessness, and a huge, explosive finish. It is a wine of great stature as well as intensity. |

'Campoleone'
Lamborghini
RP -
This famed 50%
Merlot/50% Sangiovese blend comes from a parcel of just under 20
acres. The compelling 1999 Campoleone (20,000 bottles produced)
was aged in 100% French oak and bottled without fining or
filtration by oenologist Riccardo Cotarella. A dense opaque
purple colour is accompanied by scents of new saddle leather,
blackberry and cassis fruit, liquorice, roasted meats, and
graphite. Full-bodied and sweet, with a fabulous texture, ripe
tannin, adequate acidity, and brilliant definition, this is a
tour de force in winemaking. |

Barolo
'Monprivato'
G. Mascarello
RP -
The 2007 Barolo
Monprivato is stunningly beautiful. Monprivato is seldom
this rich when it is young. It is most often intensely aromatic,
mid-weight and frequently out of balance, especially right after
bottling. The 2007 is none of those things. It is a rich,
dramatic wine endowed with tons of fruit and a sweeping,
enveloping personality. It is also primary and at the
beginning of what is likely to be a long, long life. Despite its
seeming fragility, Monprivato is one of the most long-lived of
all Baroli, even in its weakest vintages. The 2007 is
spectacular, but it is very, very young and in need of
significant cellaring to shed some its baby fat. |

'Monprivato'
G. Mascarello
RP -
Mascarello’s 2004
Barolo Monprivato is an explosive wine with an almost Pinot-like
expression of purity in its fruit. This round, sweet Barolo is
extremely primary at this stage, with tons of dense fruit that
almost cover the wine’s tannins completely. Subtle overtones of
roses and tar develop in the glass, rounding out this majestic
wine. Monprivato is one of the world’s very finest values in
collectible, age-worthy wine, and the 2004 is another
classic in the making. I was blown away by this wine’s sheer
balance and harmony, both of which are remarkable
considering the wine’s age |

'Monprivato'
G. Mascarello
RP -
The 2001 Barolo
Monprivato, a light to medium red, represents the highest level
of elegance, with a captivating nose of roses, tar, orange peel,
cinnamon and liquorice, followed by layers of sweet dark fruit
and minerals that evolve in a never-ending counterpoint of
aromas and sensations, with much depth, precision and freshness
on the finish. Everything is perfectly in balance here – still
my guess is that this great wine is showing only a hint of its
potential. It is one of the finest Monprivatos in recent memory
and a wine no one who is passionate about Barolo should be
without. |

This is what Antonio Galloni (RP) had to say: "I
was completely blown away by the wines I tasted from Il Poggione
this year (2004 vintage).

won’t want to miss these exceptional wines. Winemaker Fabrizio

they deserve all the praise in the world." |

Brunello di Montalcino
Il Poggione
RP -
The 2006 Brunello di
Montalcino is another superb Brunello from Il Poggione. The
ripeness of the vintage meets a classic sense of structure as
this bold, full-bodied wine takes shape in the glass. The
2006 doesn’t have the elegance or finesse of the 2004, instead
it offers a decidedly more virile, masculine expression of
Sangiovese. Dark cherries, tobacco, smoke and underbrush wrap
around a wall of tannin as the finish builds to a majestic
close. Il Poggione’s Brunello remains one of the best values
in fine, cellar-worthy wine. |

Brunello di Montalcino
Il Poggione

The 2004 Brunello
di Montalcino is awesome.
This finessed, regal Brunello flows onto the palate with
seamless layers of perfumed fruit framed by silky, finessed
tannins. The wine remains extremely primary at this stage, and
its full range of aromas and flavours have yet to emerge, but
the sheer pedigree of this Brunello is unmistakable. The
elegant, refined finish lasts an eternity, and subtle notes of
menthol, spices, liquorice and leather add final notes of
complexity. The estate’s 2004 Brunello is a wine to buy and
bury in the deepest corner of the cellar. Brunello is never
inexpensive, but this is the real deal, and in relative terms,
it is one of the world’s great values in fine, cellar worthy
wine. |

Mocha, smoke, tar, grilled herbs and black fruit emerge from the

Valdipiatta
RP - The 2000 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, a dark ruby, offers the warm, ripe, almost roasted nose of a hot vintage. The
ample flavours, dense and rich, upholster the palate with velvety tannins, and the concentration is balanced with much suppleness and roundness. |
