Campoleone
RP -
One of the most spectacular wines made in Italy, this
unfined/unfiltered, Merlot/Sangiovese blend (about 3,400 cases
produced) boasts an extraordinary perfume of saddle leather,
smoke, cassis, prunes, and plums. Rich, full-bodied, and
voluptuously-textured, with layers of concentrated fruit, a
magnificent seamlessness, and a huge, explosive finish. It is a wine of great stature as well as intensity. |

Campoleone
RP -
This famed 50%
Merlot/50% Sangiovese blend comes from a parcel of just under 20
acres. The compelling 1999 Campoleone (20,000 bottles produced)
was aged in 100% French oak and bottled without fining or
filtration by oenologist Riccardo Cotarella. A dense opaque
purple colour is accompanied by scents of new saddle leather,
blackberry and cassis fruit, liquorice, roasted meats, and
graphite. Full-bodied and sweet, with a fabulous texture, ripe
tannin, adequate acidity, and brilliant definition, this is a
tour de force in winemaking. |

Barolo Monprivato
RP -
The 2001 Barolo
Monprivato, a light to medium red, represents the highest level
of elegance, with a captivating nose of roses, tar, orange peel,
cinnamon and liquorice, followed by layers of sweet dark fruit
and minerals that evolve in a never-ending counterpoint of
aromas and sensations, with much depth, precision and freshness
on the finish. Everything is perfectly in balance here – still
my guess is that this great wine is showing only a hint of its
potential. It is one of the finest Monprivatos in recent memory
and a wine no one who is passionate about Barolo should be
without. |

RP - The 1998 Ateo (a blend of 60% Sangiovese and 40% Cabernet Sauvignon) is a gloriously ripe, full-bodied, velvety-textured effort with a dark ruby/purple colour, plenty of smoky, earthy, blackberry, cherry, and currant fruit, a touch of graphite, decent acidity,
and a seamless, opulent, voluptuous finish. |

RP - Ciacci Piccolomini's 2000 is the finest Rosso di Montalcino I have ever tasted. This deep ruby/garnet-coloured, outrageously rich Rosso boasts an explosive bouquet of smoke, dried herbs, black fruits, tobacco, and fruit cake.
Luscious and opulently-textured, with a sensual, velvety-textured feel that cascades over the palate with no hard edges. |

Margheria
RP - The dark plum-coloured 1998 Barolo Margheria exhibits structure as well as a backward character.
It is full-bodied, with outstanding concentration, offering notes of chocolate, black cherry liqueur, spice box, and earth. There is plenty of glycerine, moderate tannin, and a long, 40-second finish in this tightly-knit effort. |

IL POGGIONE
This estate is on TOP
Form!
This is what Antonio Galloni (RP) had to say: "I
was completely blown away by the wines I tasted from Il Poggione
this year (2004 vintage).
Readers who want to experience first-class Sangiovese from Montalcino
won’t want to miss these exceptional wines. Winemaker Fabrizio
Bindocci and his team have done an exceptional job for which
they deserve all the praise in the world." |

Brunello di Montalcino
RP -
The 2004 Brunello
di Montalcino is awesome.
This finessed, regal Brunello flows onto the palate with
seamless layers of perfumed fruit framed by silky, finessed
tannins. The wine remains extremely primary at this stage, and
its full range of aromas and flavours have yet to emerge, but
the sheer pedigree of this Brunello is unmistakable. The
elegant, refined finish lasts an eternity, and subtle notes of
menthol, spices, liquorice and leather add final notes of
complexity. The estate’s 2004 Brunello is a wine to buy and
bury in the deepest corner of the cellar. Brunello is never
inexpensive, but this is the real deal, and in relative terms,
it is one of the world’s great values in fine, cellar worthy
wine. |

Vino Nobile di Montepulciano 'Asinone'
RP -
The 2001 Vino Nobile
di Montepulciano Asinone continues to be an exemplary
single-vineyard offering, properly so as it was the first such
bottling in the appellation in 1985. A full ruby in colour with
an important, expansive nose of red and black berry fruit,
leather, graphite, and vanilla, it offers powerful and focused
flavours, full in their volume, elegant in their shape, and with
an impeccable fusion of the fruit and oak. |

From a well-known

reveals the essence of cherry jam in its massive constitution.
It is a powerful, full-bodied effort displaying pronounced black
cherry liqueur-like aromas and flavours, huge extract and
glycerine, and 14.5-15% alcohol. Remarkably pure, delineated,
and balanced for a wine of such massiveness. |

Le Volte

The 2006 Le Volte is especially generous in this vintage.
This plump, juicy wine bursts from the glass with an array of
super-ripe dark plums, cherries, smoke and liquorice. It is
an engaging, rewarding wine to enjoy over the next few years. Le
Volte is made from Sangiovese which is purchased from outside
producers plus Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon grown on the
property. |

OrnellaiaToscana
RP -
The 2006 Ornellaia flows from the glass in a profound expression of ripe,
dark fruit. With time in the glass layers of minerals, cassis, tar, sweet
herbs and French oak emerge, adding further complexity. This harmonious
Ornellaia combines the richness of the vintage with superb freshness and
awesome balance. Today the wine’s sheer density almost manages to hide
the tannins, but they are there, and the wine will ultimately benefit from a
few years in the cellar.
The 2006 Ornellaia is one of the highlights of this sensational Tuscan
vintage. |

OrnellaiaToscana
RP -
The medium-bodied 2005 Ornellaia shows plenty of delineation in its dark
cherries, blueberries, spices, minerals and crushed rocks. The 2005 doesn’t
have the detail of the 2004 or the richness of the 2006, but it does offer
notable finesse and clarity in an understated style for this wine. My
impression is that this will be a relatively early-maturing vintage of
Ornellaia, which is not a bad thing, considering the age-worthiness of the
two vintages which surround it.
In 2005 Ornellaia is 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, 14% Cabernet Franc
and 4% Petit Verdot. It is a big success in this vintage. |

The gorgeous 2004 Ornellaia is a great way to start this tasting.
A lively dark ruby, it is a vibrant effort bursting with expressive
aromatics and layered, well-delineated fruit, showing much purity on the
palate and closing with a long, finessed finish. Readers hoping to catch
this wine’s full array of nuances will have to wait at least another few
years as the wine remains quite primary today.
This exquisite effort is not to be missed. A blend of 60% Cabernet
Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot. |

The estate’s 2006
Giusto di Notri is another weighty, powerful offering
bursting with tons of primary fruit. Sweet herbs, cassis and

time to reach the full range of its potential, but it is
awfully impressive even at this early stage. |

offers lovely notes of nuanced yet vibrant ripe dark fruit,
graphite, minerals and toasted oak with great length, superb

For the first time I
preferred the Cabernet/Merlot blend to the all- Merlot wine, and
there can be few doubts that the 2001 Giusto di Notri is a
stunning wine. A blackish ruby/purple with a fabulous nose
of textbook Cabernet aromas, black currants and blackberries,
graphite, river gravel, and sweet herbs, its potent, dense, and
packed palate displays flavours of perfect poise, grace and
power intertwined and intermingled, shape and grip at the
highest level from the initial explosive notes to the
resonant, sweet finish. |
