GERMAN Wines
German wines
tend to be overlooked, owing to the not-so-great reputation of the
low-cost wines like Blue Nun and other cheap drinkers.
This is a great shame, as their top wines are world-class and offer
wonderful value for money when compared with other top white wines from
around the world.
Try them and see for yourself |

Riesling QbA
RP -
Powerful aromas of smoky
gun-flint burst from the glass of the 2003 Riesling QbA. Though it was
harvested at a whopping 90 degrees Oechsle it is superbly focused,
revealing liquid rock, flint, and minerals in its long character. It
should be consumed over the next 8 years. Bravo to Helmut Dönnhoff for
this magical line-up! |

Riesling Kabinett
Oberhauser Leistenberg
RP -
Entering the realm of
tasteable residual sugar, Donnhoff’s 2004 Oberhauser Leistenberg
Riesling Kabinett combines cassis, grapefruit, ripe apple, and wet stone
and faintly smoky mineral notes, all in a manner reminiscent of
Piesporter Goldtropfchen. Honey, grapefruit, wet stone, and bitter black
berry notes combine for an animated, succulent, sappy, yet decisively
mineral finish.

Riesling Eiswein
Oberhauser Brucke
RP -
The 2002 Riesling Eiswein
Oberhauser Brucke is a grand slam home run for Donnhoff. It is so
intense, so powerful, and so complex as to instil fear in the taster.
Its apricot and peach cobbler aromas lead to a jellied core of cassis,
raspberries, syrupy slate, and oodles of spices. It is simply amazing
that a wine of this richness, ripeness, and depth can retain perfect
definition, grip, and refinement. What is truly terrifying, however, is
that Donnhoff produced a three-star Eiswein from the same vineyard in
2002, one he presumably considers better than this sublime nectar. Part
of me is grateful that I was unable to taste it, however, as I have only
100 points with which to work. Bravo! |
