DOMAINE PAUL PERNOT
Top grower of the old school, making delicious wine.
Paul Pernot is more in love with his wines than making a name for himself,
which must be good for all of us! |

Batard Montrachet
Grand Cru
ST - Aromas of candied lemon peel, peach,
clove and honey. Large-scaled, rich and sweet,
with an exotic pineapple character in the middle
and on the fat finish. Bigger than the
Bienvenues but also more obviously alcoholic,
and less precise on the back end.

Batard Montrachet
Grand Cru
ST -
Musky but pure aromas of
stone fruits, lemon, hay, white flowers and minerals; smells
concentrated. Then large-scaled, dense and super-concentrated; plenty
bright but less aromatic today than the more showy Bienvenues. This
super-ripe grand cru conveys a softer impression (the acidity here is
actually 3.9 grams per litre, vs. 4.2 for the Bienvenues) without being
at all flat. Pernot uses about 40% new oak for his two grand crus.

Batard Montrachet
Grand Cru
ST -
Pale, green-tinged colour.
Musky, spicy aromas of lemon cream, flowers and hazelnut; more complex
and more expressive than the Bienvenues. Fatter, riper and sweeter on the
palate than the Bienvenues and much easier to taste today. Fruit and
mineral flavours are lifted by a floral element. Very harmonious young
grand cru with an enticing sugar/acid balance. Persistent, stony
aftertaste. |

Batard Montrachet
Grand Cru
ST -
Green-tinged colour,
despite the fact that this fruit was picked late. Very ripe aromas of
peach, grilled nuts and marzipan; slightly candied in character. Big,
rich and smooth, with terrific volume and sucrosity. Much easier to
taste today than the last sample, as this has two grams per litre of
residual sugar vs. one for the Bienvenue. Sweet, sexy, full and very
long on the aftertaste.
Offers outstanding potential. |

Bienvenues-Batard Montrachet
Grand Cru
ST - Aromas of peach, menthol and white
flowers. Firm and juicy, with harmonious acidity
and a floral element giving this grand cru a
light touch and good inner-mouth aromatic
character. With its firmness and saline
minerality, this deep, very long wine largely
avoids the exotic side of the vintage.

Bienvenues-Batard Montrachet
Grand Cru

Captivating aromas of
under-ripe pineapple, lemon and mint. Rich and silky wine with a strong
stony character and superb mouth coverage. This mounts slowly and
impressively on the back end, with the finish offering an uncanny
combination of power and perfume, and the stony flavour dusting the
palate. |

Grand Cru
ST -
Scented nose offers
grapefruit, pineapple and mint. Intensely flavoured and very pure, with
the minty component lifting the pineapple and stone flavours. Very
bright acids are nicely integrated. This wine finished its malolactic
fermentation comparatively late, and today the wine seems less showy
than the Pucelles. But finishes bright and very long. |

Puligny Montrachet
Pucelles
1er Cru
ST - Medium yellow. Pineapple and
stone on the nose. More minerally in the
mouth than the Folatieres but also tight and
backward, with a faintly exotic element.
This is thick and ripe but comes across as
less sweet today than the Folatieres-and
perhaps less sweet than usual for this cuvee
at this stage of its evolution. The
lingering finish features a candied quality
and a note of bay leaf.

Pucelles
1er Cru

from 30- to 50-year-old
vines that typically produce small berries; the yield was just 35
hectolitres in 2001, according to Pernot. Enticing, sweet aromas of ripe
citrus fruits and nut oil. Fat, silky and sweet; thick but fine, with no
hard edges. This offers impressive body and concentration. Boasts
stronger material than the Folatiere's. |

Brooding spicy nose; very

version. |

Good pale colour. Musky white flowers, minerals

elevated alcohol and an exotic whiff of lychee.
Could use a bit more class and definition.

Aromas of peach, mint,
flowers and nuts. Juicy, spicy and sweet, with lovely peachy fruit
framed by fresh acids. This has terrific balance for village wine.
Rather unevolved today, due to the fact that a major component of this
cuvee was racked very recently. Direct and firm but not at all hard.
This should be excellent. |

Good pale colour. Aromatic,
full-blown peachy nose is more exotic than that of the 2002. The peachy
fruit carries through on the palate, which is surprisingly juicy,
backward and lacy. A thirst-quenching, minerally village wine that
finishes lively and dry. Here's a superb hot-weather chardonnay |

The discreet hint of pain
grillé this displayed from barrel has now been fully integrated into the
now much more expressive nose that offers complex notes of peach, pear
and apricots that complement perfectly the full-bodied flavours that are
remarkably precise and intense, underpinned by driving intensity and a
mineral-suffused finish that goes on and on. In short, this is a drop
dead gorgeous wine that should age for upwards of 15 years though there
is so much dry extract that it will be approachable after another 2 to 4
years. |
