DOMINIQUE LAURENT
A top
winemaker; making complex, elegant and long lasting wines. For those who like their
burgundies to be a memorable experience!
His village wines are particularly good value; as they mainly come from
old vines and are very well made. |

Beaune Clos des Mouches

Very good colour. Lush, succulent and voluptuous on the nose.
Gently oaky.
Slightly rigid at first on the palate. But the follow-through is better.
Good grip. Plenty of depth and intensity.

Chambolle Musigny

Medium red. Red
fruits, minerals and spices on the nose. Juicy, floral and penetrating,
if a bit reduced. Densely packed but has good Chambolle tang and energy,
with the smoky oak sweetening but not overwhelming the fruit. Intensely
flavoured, firm and long, with good clarity on the aftertaste. |

Red-ruby. Knockout nose of

Very ripe, wild aromas of
black fruits, animal fur, roasted game and iron. Creamy-sweet, but juicy
in the mouth; really amazingly silky for Fixin. Firm tannins are buried
in fruit. I certainly haven't tasted a more promising Fixin lately. |

Ruby-red. Complex

fine tannins. Should make an excellent village wine. |

Bright ruby-red. Subdued
but pure aromas of cassis and liquorice, along with a whiff of fresh
blood. Concentrated but backward, with dark flavours of black fruits and
game and an almost medicinal austerity today. More sullen than the
Lavaux and Combottes but structured to age gracefully |

Chambertin Clos de Beze
Grand Cru
AM -
Strong oak spice frames
equally intense black fruit and earth aromas and powerful, extremely
rich, indeed even opulent yet robust flavours that are firmly tannic but
there is a lovely ripeness and sweetness to them. This isn't
particularly nuanced at the moment but there is outstanding extract and
it both coats and stains the palate. As with the Bonnes Mares, this is a
dramatic wine but less obviously new world in style. |

DOMAINE
POUSSE d'Or
Purchased by
Patrick Landanger in 1997, this domaine has subsequently be going from
strength to strength!
He calls 2005 a "great vintage in the grand classic style of the finest
burgundies" and says it is the best year since he purchased the
property. |

Corton Clos du Roi
Grand Cru
AM -
In contrast to the
relatively open nose of the Bressandes, the Clos du Roi is brooding,
reserved and sombre, though the most black and dark berry fruit aromas
are ripe and spicy and this spice character continues onto the rich,
power and robust flavours that are supported by a balanced core of sap
and an extremely firm but not hard core of tannins.
This is a big wine yet it remains relatively refined and is clearly
built for the long haul. |

Chambertin
Grand Cru
AM -
The difference between
Chambertin and Clos de Bèze is sharply etched in 2004 as this is cooler,
bigger, richer and more powerful though less elegant and with a more
limited range of spices specifically and aromatic breadth in general.
The medium full flavours are reserved, tight, precise and very pure with
extraordinarily good punch and precision, all wrapped in a firm, dusty
and linear finish. I particularly like the mouth coating quality of the
flavours as there is ample dry extract here, which serves to perfectly
buffer the firmly tannic spine. Outstanding stuff and while not a truly
great Rousseau Chambertin, it's knocking on the door. |

Chambertin Clos de Béze
Grand Cru
AM -
Superbly elegant in every
respect with its stylish, astonishingly complex pinot fruit,
marvellously intense, sappy, crushed panoply of red and black fruit
flavours. As with the Chambertin, this is more of a medium weight effort
underpinned by very fine tannins and palate staining length. This is the
essence of Clos de Bèze as it is incredibly spicy and wonderfully
seductive. This is extremely classy juice. |

Gevery Chambertin
Clos St Jacques
1er Cru
AM -
An equally fresh if perhaps
not quite as ripe nose of red fruit and mineral-infused aromas of
surpassing complexity introduce delicious, intense and slightly firmer
medium full flavours that culminate in a subtly persistent finish. This
is refined and exceptionally pure and while it is on the lighter side,
the focus, detail and precision is extremely impressive. Like the
Ruchottes, this trades on elegance and refinement yet there is no lack
of flavour authority despite the absence of raw size and weight. |
