    JOSEPH DROUHIN
Top Beaune negociant with a clear house style: elegant yet classy with plenty of richness and flavour.

24 75cl Beaune
Clos des Mouches
1er Cru
AM -
After taking a year off in 2004 (it was not released because of hail), the red Clos des Mouches is back and in excellent form with a high-toned and wonderfully seductive nose of raspberry and strawberry aromas nuanced by hints of oak, spice and earth that continues on the rich, sweet and solidly detailed medium full flavours, all wrapped in a delicious, supple and relatively forward finish supported by buried tannins. Like the Grèves, this is so well balanced that it should age effortlessly.

12 75cl Beaune
Clos des Mouches
1er Cru

Classic ruby. This is a much more serious wine with deeper, richer and earthier fruit aromas that are long, intense and offer excellent flavour authority. This is so primary that it suggests that it will require ample time in bottle to be at its best.

4 75cl Chambolle Musigny
Les Baudes 1er Cru
AM -
There is a bit more of everything here, particularly minerality with a classic Chambolle nose that is sophisticated, pure and gorgeously refined and leads to mineral-driven and distinctly more powerful medium full flavours that seem to gather in intensity and energy as they drive towards an explosive finish. This is classy juice and should be capable of delivering 25+ years of enjoyment as this is packed with potential from front to back.

30 75cl Griotte-Chambertin GC
AM -
A cherry and raspberry liqueur nose merges into supple and very round, indeed almost soft medium full flavours with enough concentration to coat the palate on the moderately long finish. This is classy, stylish and delicious but so forward that it will be approachable very early.

10 75cl Griotte-Chambertin GC
AM -
Intriguing notes of game, leather and earth nuances can be found on the sappy, long, precise and focused flavours of indescribable complexity and what is perhaps the best acid/fruit balance of these '02s. Understated and supremely classy juice that is indisputably of reference standard quality. A simply gorgeous Drouhin Griotte and worth a special search to find.

12 75cl Griotte-Chambertin GC
AM -
This is fresher on the nose despite being riper with delicious, complex and ultra pure middle weight flavours of obvious breed and a certain lovely reserve. Exceptionally powerful for Griotte with stunning length and a textured, dusty finish but despite the power, this is a remarkably precise wine blessed with great underlying material. My only reservation is the absence of better than average complexity; if the wine develops it, then my score will most certainly be conservative because this is already one very impressive effort.

12 75cl Griotte-Chambertin GC
AM -
Even riper than the Grands Echézeaux with predominantly red fruits followed by quite forward, medium weight flavours and the same sappy, rich, intense flavours and fine tannins. This is not quite as precise as the former wine but there is a touch better density even though I suspect this will drink sooner.

2 75cl Griottes-Chambertin GC

Fullish colour. A touch of brown at the rim. Full, rich, meaty nose. Plenty of depth and not unduly tannic. Good grip. Plenty of depth. Very good concentration on the follow-through.
Very Fine.

Vosne Romanee
Beauxmonts 1er Cru
AM -
Spice and very dark fruits with a wonderful mouth feel of velvet and buried dusty tannins. Despite the velvet, there is a much more structured quality to the '99 than the '00 with the same notes of torrefaction on the nose yet more elegance and Vosne spice as well. Comes across much like a mini-Richebourg but with less size and intensity. Quite impressively detailed and a wine that should live for a long time.

    DOMAINE GROS, Frere & Soeur
An excellent Vosne Romanee based domaine, making full bodied wines with lots of depth and good fruit to tannin balance.
Highly recommended, as they are very classic and age well.

Clos Vougeot 'Musigni'
Grand Cru
AM -
As it usually is, here the nose is more reserved with black fruit and earth aromas nuanced by deft oak hints that complement the broad-scaled and powerful full-bodied flavours that are both robust and sappy, culminating in a deep, sweet and impressively layered finish that is dry and austere in the best sense. Good juice with solid upside potential and while the resurfaces on the backend, the oak is relatively well integrated already.

Echezeaux
Grand Cru
AM -
More prominent wood influence frames higher-toned and more complex aromas of red pinot and blackberry fruits aromas that evidence notes of soy and anise that can also be found on the precise, rich and powerful flavours that offer good volume and real drive on the sleekly muscled and moderately structured finish. This has good mid-palate depth and plenty of underlying material which should make for up to a decade of improvement.

Charmes Chambertin
Grand Cru

AM - Interestingly, this is a good deal more open and expressive than the Estournelles at the moment with its large-scaled and dense flavours of compelling sweetness. This is a powerful, grapey wine with mouth coating and palate staining sappy finish. A striking wine.

Gevery Chambertin
Les Poissenots 1er Cru

AM - An extremely fresh and bright red fruit and mineral-inflected nose complements to perfection the clean, detailed and superbly energetic medium full flavours that culminate in a sappy, serious, firm and equally explosive finish that is driving and linear in character. This is a sophisticated effort in both its understatement and purity. Highly recommended.

Gevery Chambertin
Les Poissenots 1er Cru

AM - Stylistically similar to the Petite Chapelle with its burst of fresh fruit and insistent minerality that runs the length of the wine. Not as rich as the Craipillot but much finer with better length and persistence, all in a medium weight package. A very pretty wine with lots of character.

18 75cl Givry
Clos de la Servoisine 1er Cru
RP
- Spicy oak scents are interspersed with black cherries and blackberries in the nose of the 2002 Givry Clos de la Servoisine. Armed with gorgeous depth of fruit, this rich, medium to full-bodied wine is plush, beautifully ripe, and generously endowed with dark berries. Notes of vanilla can be detected in its long, structured finish.

    DOMAINE FRANCOIS LAMARCHE
A top Vosne Romanee domaine with some excellent vineyard parcels, the Grand Rue is right next to the DRC Romanee Conti and La Tache plots!

36 75cl Grands Echezeaux
Grand Cru
AM
- A more refined and more elegant nose of red pinot, blue berry and intense floral notes, particularly violets, introduces rich, pure and sleekly muscled full-bodied flavours that are perhaps a bit more generous and accessible than usual while culminating in an impeccably balanced, serious and gorgeously long finish. This is a classic Grands Echezeaux as the inherent robustness of the structure is hidden by the class and breed of the nose and flavours. I quite like this.
2006 £98.00 AM94
2016-32
12 75cl Grands Echezeaux
Grand Cru
AM
- Strong wood spice and roasted berry notes lead to solidly structured, robust, muscular, unevolved flavours of the same exceptional intensity of the best in this range. The finish is strikingly long though there is a touch of warmth as well. This is frankly a bit awkward today but the underlying material is so good that it is wonderfully promising and this will require at least a decade to be at its best.
2002 £92.00 AM93
2012-20
48 75cl La Grande Rue (Monopole)
Grand Cru
AM
- A reserved, indeed even discreet nose reflects a ripe panoply of spicy red and black pinot fruit aromas amplified by plenty of spice notes that are transmitted clearly to the rich, full, sweet and very stylish flavours that are at once mouth coating and serious yet entirely classy on the driving finish. While the 2005 is bigger and more powerful, there is pure and racy character here that imparts real energy to the '06. Impressive.
2006 £142.00 AM94
2016-32
24 75cl La Grande Rue (Monopole)
Grand Cru
AM
- Discreet if not invisible hints of wood spice complement gorgeously spicy and elegant black pinot fruit nuanced with an abundance of different herb and tea notes. The medium full flavours are classy, precise and very pure with a dusty, intense and sappy texture that both coats and stains the palate. I very much admire the way this is powerful and weighty yet retains a first rate sense of balance. Terrific juice.
2003 £122.00 AM94
2012-28
12 75cl La Grande Rue (Monopole)
Grand Cru
AM
- A much more reserved and backward nose of moderate wood spice and sexy black fruit introduces elegant, punchy and pure flavours that are robust, sappy and powerful with relatively fine tannins are finer and excellent length. This is classy if not truly compelling juice that should improve for a decade and last another after that.

2012-29
6 75cl La Grande Rue (Monopole)
Grand Cru
AM
- Astonishingly complex and elegant black fruits combine with traces of earth and background nuances of wood spice. Dusty, refined and sophisticated tannins underpin medium weight, remarkably sappy and pure flavours that display excellent intensity and persistence as well as terrific richness. Another superb effort.

6 75cl La Grande Rue (Monopole)

2008-22
6 75cl La Grande Rue (Monopole)
Grand Cru
AM -
Explosive fruity with ripe blackberry, game and earth notes in evidence followed by medium weight, focused and reasonably rich flavours underpinned by solid but not hard structure plus good if not exceptional length. The balance is such that this should age well. In sum, this is a pretty rather than profound wine.
1996 £84.00 AM88
2008-26
36 75cl Vosne Romanee
'Les Malconsorts'
1er Cru
AM -
Classic ruby. The most expressive of these four Vosne 1ers at present with a spicy mix of mostly red berry fruit with a lovely floral note of rose petal that continues onto the equally spicy, pure and impeccably well balanced flavours that also evidence excellent precision on the intense, long and serious finish.
2006 £54.00 AM92
2012-28
24 75cl Vosne Romanee
'Les Suchots'
1er Cru

As one would reasonably expect, this is both more elegant and more aromatically interesting with a spicy nose that is very Vosne with its black fruit, soy, anise and hoisin notes that slide into rich, full and sweet flavours that possess good volume and intensity on the mouth coating and admirably persistent finish.
