Beaune
'Clos des Mouches'
1er Cru
J. Drouhin
AM -
Very mild reduction is not
enough to completely hide the otherwise pretty nose of red berry fruit,
violets and earth aromas though if you're going to drink one young, I would
recommend 20 to 30 minutes of aeration first. The rich but well detailed
and quite finely mineral-inflected flavours possess a fleshy mouth feel as
well as excellent volume and length. This is quite ripe but not over the
top and this should age well. |

'Clos des Mouches'
1er Cru
J. Drouhin
AM -
This is the first wine to
display a subtle hint of stems with its spice and floral notes adding
interest to the softly earthy red currant and pinot fruit aromas that
introduce bright and admirably pure medium-bodied flavours that possess
fine detail and a discreet minerality on the lingering but mildly gassy
finish. I would suggest decanting this first if you're curious to try
one young. |

'Clos des Mouches'
1er Cru
J. Drouhin
AM - Classic ruby. This is a much more serious wine with deeper, richer and earthier fruit aromas that are long, intense and offer excellent flavour authority. This is so primary that it suggests that it will require ample time in bottle to be at its best. |

AM -
Also as one would expect, this
is much, much more elegant though not more complex with a ripe aromatic
profile of red and blue pinot fruit trimmed in discreet wet stone and soft
earth notes, both of which are picked up by the supple, lacy, indeed
even delicate flavours that are highly refined but seem to lack the usual
depth that I generally find with this wine. |

'Les Baudes'
1er Cru
J. Drouhin
AM - There is a bit more of everything here, particularly minerality with a classic Chambolle nose that is sophisticated, pure and gorgeously refined and leads to mineral-driven and distinctly more powerful medium full flavours that seem to gather in intensity and energy as they drive towards an explosive finish. This is classy juice and should be capable of delivering 25+ years of enjoyment as this is packed with potential from front to back. |

Griotte-Chambertin
Grand Cru
J. Drouhin
AM - A cherry and raspberry liqueur nose merges into supple and very round, indeed almost soft medium full flavours with enough concentration to coat the palate on the moderately long finish. This is classy, stylish and delicious but so forward that it will be approachable very early. |

AM - Even riper than the Grands Echézeaux with predominantly red fruits followed by quite forward, medium weight flavours and the same sappy, rich, intense flavours and fine tannins. This is not quite as precise as the former wine but there is a touch better density even though I suspect this will drink sooner. |

This is also quite cool yet ripe
with an elegant and airy nose of high-toned wild berries and red cherry

intense and well-defined medium-bodied flavours that possess a real
sense of energy on the dusty, mouth coating and impressively long finish.

Like the Fuées, this is
highly perfumed and very Chambolle with its restrained, complex and
ultra-pure nose of red pinot fruit but here there is a more evident taut
muscularity to the delineated, intense and equally pure medium-bodied
flavours that possess excellent energy as well as a mineral-streak that runs
to the serious, dusty and driving finish. I quite like this and the
balance and concentration should permit it to age well for at least a decade
and last several more. Impressive. |

Clos Vougeot

Lamarche
AM -
Wood spice and pungent earth notes add breadth to the ripe and largely red
fruit-based nose. The big, powerful and concentrated flavours possess
plenty of sap that helps to buffer the mildly rustic and very firm tannic
spine that shapes the driving and energetic finish. This should be
excellent in time but it will need plenty of it. |

AM - A beautiful nose combines notes of ripe and pure red berry fruit aromas that are liberally laced with warm earth and oak spice hints that can also be found on the unusually refined broad-shouldered flavours that are rich, delicious and detailed while possessing good mid-palate sap and the structural elements appear to be sufficiently ripe to avoid dryness. |

Clos Vougeot
Grand Cru
Lamarche
AM - A discreet touch of wood spice frames the earthy and ripe but reticent nose of red pinot fruit and violets where the earth continues onto the very rich and big-bodied flavours that possess ample muscle and plenty of sap buffered the very firm and tannic finish that is classic Clos de Vougeot with its pronounced youthful austerity. This is really quite promising. |

AM - A very attractive blend of black fruit, Vosne spice and a hint of new wood introduces rich, full and notably ripe flavours that possess good volume and a velvety, indeed almost suave finish that cannot disguise the impressive power and robust structure. This will require the better part of a decade to fully resolve the tannic spine. |

This is a classic Grands Echezeaux as the inherent robustness of the structure is hidden by the class and breed of the nose and flavours. I quite like this. |
