DOMAINE COQUARD
LOISON- FLEUROT
This domaine
was a serendipitous discovery in 2016 by Neal Martin of
Vinous.com.
Here are some of his comments:
Winemaker Thomas Colladot
allows the vineyards to articulate their own personalities so that each
one offers its own take on the vintage. Clever winemaking matched with
excellent terroirs. |

Bourgogne Rouge
Coquard Loison-Fleurot
Vinous.com/Neal Martin
-
The 2018 Bourgogne Rouge has a perfumed bouquet of
black currant and raspberry aromas, all very pure and well defined. The
palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, plenty of black fruit and a
precise finish. This is very fine for a generic red Burgundy. |

Chablis

Notes of petrol, quinine, pear and apple precede
the succulent, round and delicious middle weight flavours that exude
a subtle minerality onto the clean, dry, refreshing and saline-inflected
finish. This nicely complex and balanced effort should be enjoyable
young. |

There is a touch of matchstick character to the citrusy apple and
floral-scented nose. The nicely voluminous, seductive and succulent
middle weight flavours possess slightly better depth and persistence on
the bitter lemon-inflected finish. This too should be approachable
shortly after release. |

MAISON VERGET
Top Maconais negociant.
RP/William Kelley -
Jean-Marie Guffens's Verget label, today
superintended by the able Julien Desplans, continues to be a reference
point for the Mâconnais. The best cuvées very much belong among the
Mâconnais's élite, but this portfolio is also rich with terrific values
to purchase by the case that would make ideal daily drinkers or
by-the-glass pours.
Classy but keenly priced white Burgundy isn't easy to come by these
days, so we should all be thankful for the Maison Verget. These wines
come warmly recommended |

'Vignes de Montbrison'
Verget
RP/William Kelley -
Offering up aromas of peach,
pear, golden orchard fruit and freshly baked bread, the 2019
Mâcon-Bussières Vignes de Montbrison is medium to full-bodied, fleshy
and enveloping, with an elegantly textural attack, lively acids and a
nicely defined finish. This has turned out very well. |

-Pierreclos
'Lieu Secret'
Verget
RP/William Kelley -
As usual, the 2019 Mâcon-Pierreclos Lieu Sécret
originates in the only part of lieu-dit Le Chavigne that Guffens doesn't
own himself, but his neighbour refuses to sell the vineyard, consenting
only to sell the grapes. Offering up aromas of pear and crisp orchard
fruit, framed by a touch of toasty oak, it's medium to full-bodied,
fleshy and muscular, with a concentrated core of ripe fruit, succulent
acids and a nicely defined finish. |

Aromas of pear, peach, wheat toast and pastry

to full-bodied, elegantly fleshy wine with a nicely concentrated core of
sun-kissed fruit, lively acids and a nicely defined finish. |

Pouilly-Fuissé
'La Roche'
Verget
RP/William Kelley -
The 2019 Pouilly-Fuissé La Roche is the most
youthfully reserved wine in the range, unwinding in the glass with
scents of pear, peach, buttered toast and mandarin orange. Medium to
full-bodied, satiny and enveloping, it's concentrated and precise, with
lively acids and a penetrating finish. If Verget's Les Combes is
more muscular, La Roche is more elegant and refined this year: it isn't
easy to chose between them. |
