BON PASTEUR
Pomerol
RP -
Another terrific
offering from well-known oenologists Dany and Michel Rolland, the 2009
may or may not eclipse their 2005 and 2008, but it offers wonderful notes
of caramel, mocha, black cherries, and black currants in a seamless,
full-bodied, opulent style. It possesses a dense ruby/purple color,
lots of glycerine, superb purity, and a textured, long, concentrated
mouthfeel. As always, the brilliance of this team transcends its
terroir in Pomerol. |

A superb effort
from proprietors Dany and Michel Rolland. His 2005 Bon Pasteur is
an elegant, subtle, deep ruby/purple-coloured wine offering hints of
graphite, sweet mocha, black cherries, and berries that build
incrementally in the mouth, ending in a cascade of full-bodied,
concentrated fruit with good acidity, beautiful tannin, and stunning
precision as well as length. |

CLOS l'EGLISE
Pomerol
RP -
After the brilliant
1998, 2000, 2001, and 2005, I didn’t think proprietor Helene Garcin and
consulting winemaker Dr. Alain Raynaud could do any better, but the 2009
Clos l’Eglise may turn out to be superior to the aforementioned vintages.
An extraordinary wine of compelling intensity, opulence, and
breadth of flavour, it possesses a dark purple color as well as copious
aromas of sweet mocha, coffee-infused blackberry and black cherry fruit,
and no hint of oak. Fleshy and extravagantly rich with terrific purity
and precision, it is a very full-bodied, powerful Pomerol that should
drink well for 25+ years. |

A strong effort
for the vintage, the 2008 Clos l’Eglise offers notes of espresso

medium to full-bodied style with outstanding purity, texture and length.
It can be drunk now and over the next 10-12 years. Kudos to proprietress

Good rich red-ruby
colour. Brooding aromas of black cherry, black raspberry, mocha,
menthol, liquorice and smoky, nutty oak. Plush, large-scaled and sweet,
with thick, mouth coating flavours of black cherry, dark berries and
flowers. Full but not heavy, and impressively deep for the year.
Finishes broad and pliant, with fine, chocolaty tannins and lovely
persistence. A beauty! |

The beautiful 2008

fruit, crushed rock and floral notes. If this were a Burgundy, one
might think of it as a grand cru Musigny. With excellent texture,
medium to full body and stunning purity as well as nobility, this
fascinating Pomerol should drink well for 15-20 years. |

LES CRUZELLES

Pomerol
RP -
A brilliant
effort from proprietor Denis Durantou, this wine (80% Merlot and the
rest Cabernet Franc with a touch of Cabernet Sauvignon) hit 14.5% natural
alcohol. Rich mocha and black cherry notes are followed by a powerful,
lavishly rich, almost extravagant style of wine that is almost
atypical for Lalande de Pomerol, yet the purity, richness, and density are
all there. |

Also a sleeper of
the vintage, the 2008 over-delivers for its modest pedigree. Loads

5% Cabernet Sauvignon. Yields of 38 hectoliters per hectare, while higher
than in 2010, were still modest. Another powerful, big, large-scaled
effort, the 2008 exhibits an inky/purple color as well as sweet crème de

A remarkable
wine in this vintage, L’Eglise Clinet’s 2008 has a color almost as
dark as the barrel sample of 2010. Classic mocha and caramel-infused crème
de cassis and black cherry notes, with hints of liquorice and loamy soil
soar from the glass of this opaque ruby/purple, aromatically compelling
wine. Opulent, expansive, and savoury, with a broad texture, a full-bodied

LA FLEUR DE GAY
Pomerol
RP -
As I wrote last
year, this is unquestionably the finest La Fleur de Gay produced since
the back-to-back vintages of 1989 and 1990. A 100% Merlot cuvee cropped
at a low 28 hectoliters per hectare, it has put on even more weight and
richness since 2006.
There are approximately 1,000 cases of this brilliant Pomerol that
exhibits a dense ruby/purple colour as well as a sweet nose of black
raspberries, blueberries, charcoal, truffles, and subtle espresso and
toasty oak notes. Full-bodied, beautifully textured, opulent, and fleshy
with exceptional precision as well as clarity, this fabulous effort will
need 5-7 years of bottle age, and should drink well for 25 or more
years. |

LE GAY
Pomerol
RP -
One of the top
successes of the vintage, the 2008 Le Gay, a blend of 90% Merlot and
10% Cabernet Franc (13.5% alcohol) was produced from tiny yields of 25
hectoliters per hectare. Bottled unfined and unfiltered, it exhibits a
dense purple color as well as a sweet nose of spring flowers intermixed
with blueberries, blackberries, dark raspberries, crushed rocks and white
chocolate. Full-bodied, super intense and extremely promising
(although it is unusually backward for a 2008), it will benefit from 5-7
years of cellaring and may merit an even higher score in a decade or
so. |

vintage’s most astonishing wines, this superb effort boasts a dense
plum/blue/purple colour, aromas of camphor, graphite, roasted meats, and
black as well as blue fruits, a full-bodied, powerful style, low

years of bottle age, and enjoy it over the following two decades. It has
the potential to be one of the vintage’s longest lived wines. Kudos to
the proprietor, Catherine Pere-Verge, and her winemaker, Michel Rolland,
for exploiting this property to its fullest potential. |

The 1995 Latour
a Pomerol should develop into an outstanding wine, but it was
revealing considerable grip and structure following bottling. It
possesses a dark ruby/purple colour, as well as a distinctive nose of
smoked herbs, black fruits, iron, mulberries, and spice. The wine is
generous, ripe, and mouth filling, with medium to full body, and

slight bitterness kept it from receiving an outstanding score. |
